Adinath Temple
আদিনাথ মন্দির
A Shiva temple on top of Maheshkhali's Mainak Hill — the island itself takes its name from Adinath (Mahesh = Shiva). Climb the long stairways; the real payoff is behind the temple — mangroves on one side, the sea and distant Cox's Bazar on the other, betel trellises on the slopes. Best in late-afternoon light.
History & significance
The hill carries a cluster of temples — a large Shiva statue at the gate, a Hanuman shrine, a small golden temple midway, and a third golden temple at the top. Accounts mention a Buddhist vihara and a mosque inside the complex too — many cite it as an example of religious coexistence. The Shivratri fair in Falgun draws thousands.
How to get there
Via Adinath Jetty — a long walkway over the mangroves; at low tide passengers cross a bamboo-mat causeway to the boats. From the jetty, stairs lead up in a few minutes.
