Mango Orchards & Kansat Mango Market

Everyone agrees: Chapainawabganj is Bangladesh's mango capital. Endless orchards start at the roadside, and Kansat bazar is the country's biggest mango market. Himsagar, Langra, Gopalbhog, Khirsapat, Fazli, Amrapali, Lakkhanbhog, Ashwina — buying and eating mangoes straight from the trees in season is the real experience here. Visitors often say that in mango season even the air smells of mangoes.
History & significance
Mango cultivation in the Gaur region goes back at least 500 years — the terracotta of Bagha Mosque carries carved mangoes. Kansat remains the country's biggest mango hat, with trading running from dawn to dusk. Many orchard trees are 20–50 years old.
How to get there
Kansat sits on the Chapainawabganj–Sona Masjid road; from the district town an auto costs about ৳70 per person. Direct buses from Rajshahi pass through Kansat too. Orchards line both sides of the road — enter with the owner's permission.

No entry ticket for the orchards. The cost is the mangoes — green mangoes run ৳30–40/kg at orchard gates, wholesale at Kansat ৳10–30/kg; ripe ones cost more.
Opening hours & best time
Kansat bazar runs from dawn to dusk — mornings are liveliest. Visit orchards in daylight.
Best time
Mango season is the real window — June into early August. Gopalbhog arrives first, Khirsapat (Himsagar) about two weeks later, then Amrapali; Fazli and Bari-4 last until the end. Outside the season the orchards stay green, but the mango festival is over.
Traveller tips
Taste before buying — arat traders offer samples; buy by flavour, not by name.
Never pluck green mangoes without permission — fallen ripe ones are free to eat.
Ask specifically for tree-ripe mangoes — wholesalers buy green ones since they keep longer.
In season, jams stretch 1–2 km at Kansat — factor the time in.
Courier services ship mangoes countrywide — you can send them home instead of carrying.
