Destination guide
Bhola Sadar Town & Tulartuli Meghna Ghat
ভোলা সদর শহর ও তুলারটুলি মেঘনা ঘাট
The heart of Bangladesh's largest island district — many call it the 'Queen Island'. The town itself is now worth a wander: spend the afternoon at Tulartuli Meghna Ghat and its tourism centre, take a speedboat ride, and see the modern escalator market, the fish market and the Zila Parishad guest house fountain — visitors returning after ten years say the town has changed beyond recognition.
History & significance
Local legend says the name comes from a boatman called Bholagazi or Bholanath Babu. The district's old name was South Shahbazpur. The island emerged around 1235 AD with cultivation by 1300; Portuguese and Mag pirates used it as a base in the 1500s. It became a subdivision in 1869, the headquarters moved from Daulatkhan to Bhola in 1876, and it became a full district in 1984.
How to get there
Overnight launches leave Dhaka Sadarghat between 7:30 and 10:30 PM and dock at Ilisha Ghat by dawn (6–10 hours). Day launches also run roughly hourly from 8 AM. At Sadarghat, Bhola launches berth on the back side of the terminal — not at the Barishal berths at the front. An auto from Ilisha Ghat into town is Tk 10–15. Launches also connect from Barishal.

Traveller tips
Meghna hilsa is fresh and cheaper here — visitors cite market prices of Tk 350–500.
Hot sweets land at Shri Krishna Mistanna Bhandar in Ghoshpatti around noon and 6–7 PM — Tk 20 a piece.
One auto driver at Ilisha Ghat asked Tk 150 — 10–15 is the normal shared fare, so bargain.
