Darasbari Mosque

দারাসবাড়ি মসজিদ

Deep in mango orchards near the border stands this ~550-year-old ruin — no roof, no domes, but the walls, stone pillars, nine mihrabs and terracotta panels survive. Visitors say the silent, weight-of-history atmosphere is the real draw. Beside it lay the madrasa of Bengal's oldest Islamic university — known locally as '40 Ghor' (40 rooms).

History & significance

Built in 1479 under Sultan Shamsuddin Yusuf Shah — his name is on the recovered inscription. The original name was Firozpur Jame Mosque; it was renamed Darasbari ('dars' is Arabic for lesson) once the madrasa beside it was found. The madrasa was founded under Sultan Alauddin Husain Shah (1502 or 1504 — sources differ); with 40 rooms, a residential block and a library, many call it Bengal's first Islamic university. The 1897 earthquake took the roof and domes; after centuries buried, the structure was excavated in the 1970s and now sits under the Department of Archaeology. The Yusuf Shahi inscription is preserved in the Kolkata museum. The dome count is disputed — 9, 24, or by one account nearly 39.

How to get there

Reserve a van from Sona Masjid land port — ৳200–300 covers Choto Sona Mosque, Tahkhana and Darasbari together. The distance is disputed: some say 1.5 km from the port, others describe roughly 3 km along the Mahananda river. Expect a ~1 km walk from the old Dakhil Darwaza through mango orchards.
