Destination guide
Nawab Faizunnesa Zamindar Bari
নবাব ফয়জুন্নেসা জমিদার বাড়ি
The home of Nawab Faizunnesa Chowdhurani — the only female Nawab of the subcontinent — on the bank of the Dakatia river at Pashchimgaon, Laksam. The house is said to have once stood at the edge of ruin; the archaeology department has given it its youth back. The story of this pioneer of women's education is the house's real treasure.
History & significance
Nawab Faizunnesa ran her own estate — fourteen mauzas — and built a mosque in her own name and a college for girls' education, locals say. Queen Victoria, they add, conferred the Nawab title on her.
