Destination guide
Jafar Khan Ghazi Mosque
জাফর খান গাজী মসজিদ
Many consider it the district's oldest mosque — an octagonal double-domed building with round corner towers and finely carved doorways, in Majhkandi village ~18 km from town, beside the Kanaiya Bil wetland.
History & significance
Tradition says the Sufi warrior Jafar Khan Ghazi built it around 1160 after defeating the local ruler Achyutanath Ray; a captured princess, Phulbanu, accepted Islam and married him as Mahuya Bibi. Tombs of the couple — and of the legendary hunting ascetic, even his horse and dog — stand in the compound. Researchers note it was earlier known as Mamudpur Mosque and that legend and scholarship diverge; it remains in active use.
How to get there
CNG or auto from town for ~120–250 tk (about 30 minutes), or a local bus; the Kanaiya Bil wetland is right next door — visit both together.
