Destination guide
Karamjal Ecotourism Centre (Sundarbans)
করমজল ইকোট্যুরিজম সেন্টার
The easiest gateway to the Sundarbans — Karamjal. You meet deer, crocodiles, monkeys and mangroves without entering the deep forest. A deer and crocodile breeding centre, a four-storey watchtower, a hanging bridge and wooden boardwalks — families say you get the taste of the forest here without the fear. If you spot tiger paw prints along the trail, you will know you are in a real forest.
History & significance
Karamjal is the Forest Department's ecotourism centre of the Sundarbans — the world's largest mangrove forest and Bagerhat's second UNESCO heritage. Many say the forest takes its name from the sundari tree.
How to get there
Bus from the mazar area to Mongla port, then a boat — roughly 8–10 km and 45 minutes on the water from Mongla. Motorbikes are available from Katakhali. Travellers report boat hire of ৳1,500–2,000 — shared with a group it gets cheap.
Entry fee
৳46 · traveller-reported
One visitor reports a ৳46 entry ticket (tax included). Beyond Karamjal, into the deep forest, you need a Forest Department permit.
Opening hours & best time
Daylight hours — boats usually run from dawn to afternoon; exact schedules shift with the season.
Best time
Winter (November–February) — cool breeze, less rain, better wildlife odds. Boating in monsoon can be risky.
Traveller tips
Monkeys snatch things — hide bags, glasses and food; there is even a reported bag-snatching.
Throwing stones at the crocodile ghat is banned — there's a sign; obey it.
Take no plastic in, drop no litter — it's the forest rule, and the forest itself asks for it.
There are ৳10 ice creams and coconut water — small stalls exist, but still carry your own water.
