Keru & Company (Darshana Sugar Mills)
কেরু এন্ড কোম্পানি (দর্শনা চিনিকল)
This sugar mill is Darshana's pride — many call it one of Asia's largest from the British era. Built in 1938 across 300 bighas, it still produces today, and visitors come daily. One account claims it is the only sugar mill in Bangladesh that has never made a loss — the claim is unverified, but the pride is plainly real in local voices.
History & significance
Founded in 1938 and nationalised in 1972 — both dates recur in travellers' accounts. Some describe a blend of Western machinery and local sugarcane; one person adds that alongside sugar it also makes local and foreign liquor, a point of curiosity among visitors.
