Khatiya Bridge

খাতিয়া ব্রিজ

A straight road cutting through Belai Bil with water on both sides — the scene that went viral every monsoon. Locals' nickname for it is 'poor man's Nikli': country boats fishing, engine trawlers carrying singing groups, a palm-tree island in the water, and a proper sunset. Photography, cycling, bike rides — there is fun in it for everyone.

History & significance

The bridge takes its name from Khatiya village and carries the road across Belai Bil. Until a few years ago it was just a local road; now thousands of Dhaka travellers descend on it each monsoon.

How to get there

From Dhaka, take a Gazipur-Chowrasta-bound bus, get off at Kabin Market / Joydebpur Chowrasta, then continue by CNG or auto: 50 taka per person from Joydebpur rail gate, 30 taka from Kumun Bazar, then 20 taka to the bridge. A full reserved round trip with waiting runs 600-700 taka — reserve it, or you may not find a return auto. Google Maps sometimes drops you at the wrong spot; navigate to Mobile Bazar or Pubail Bazar and ask locals. It is about 13 km from Tongi. A bike or bicycle is the easiest way — the road is narrow and two cars cannot pass.

Entry fee

৳0 · traveller-reported

No ticket for the bridge itself. Costs come from boats: a small boat is about 300 taka, an engine trawler 400-700 taka an hour, and a shared engine boat 50 taka for 30 minutes. Always settle the fare before boarding.

Opening hours & best time

No fixed hours — it is a public road. But finding a return auto after dark is hard; one group got stranded hunting for one. Leave before maghrib.

Best time

Monsoon, when the bil is full, is the real season. Early in the rains it is peaceful; by peak season the afternoon crowd can jam the road for a kilometre. Most travellers prefer late afternoon and golden hour — but one cyclist argues for mornings, when it is quiet.

Traveller tips

  • Reserve your return auto in advance.

  • Boat fares are per boat, not per person — bargain knowing that.

  • You can buy fresh fish straight from the fishermen; on the way back, Pubail Bazar's evening fish market is worth a stop.
