Shrine of Hazrat Shah Makhdum (Rh.)

হযরত শাহ মকদুম (রহ.)-এর মাজার শরীফ

In the Dargah Para neighbourhood of Boalia, Rajshahi city, stands the shrine of the Sufi saint Shah Makhdum (Rh.). His name comes first in the story of how Islam spread through the Varendra region — the city's airport, thana and colleges all carry it. Devotees visit all year round, and the Padma flows just beside the shrine quarter.

History & significance

Banglapedia dates the tomb to 1645. History records that in the Mughal period Ali Quli Beg built the square, single-domed mazar over the grave. The saint's name is tied to Bagha too — that town was once known as Makhdumnagar after him. His annual urs is held here on 27 Rajab.

How to get there

The shrine sits inside Rajshahi city, in the Dargah Para area of Boalia. A rickshaw or CNG from anywhere in town gets you there easily.

Traveller tips

  • It is a religious site — modest dress is the respectful choice.

  • Crowds and stalls multiply during the urs days — keep an eye on your belongings.

  • With time in hand, pair the shrine with the nearby Padma riverbank — many speak highly of the evening view.
