Bagha Mosque

বাঘা মসজিদ

A roughly 500-year-old Sultanate brick mosque and one of Bangladesh's finest historic monuments. Terracotta panels on its walls carry mango trees, water lilies and vines, and the mosque once appeared on the old 50-taka banknote. Behind it stands the shrine of Shah Daula; in front, a vast quiet tank.

History & significance

Built in 1523–24 CE (930 AH) by Sultan Nasrat Shah of the Husain Shahi dynasty. Local tradition says the area was a tiger-infested jungle where the Sufi saint Shah Daula settled with his companions — hence the name Bagha, 'tiger'. The great 1897 earthquake brought down all ten domes; the Department of Archaeology later restored the mosque, with major repairs in 1976–77.

How to get there

About 41 km southeast of Rajshahi city in Bagha Upazila. Local buses cost roughly ৳100–120 each way; a reserved CNG is around ৳600 and the round trip takes 4–5 hours. It pairs neatly with Puthia Rajbari in a single day — from Puthia it is about half an hour by auto or van.

Entry fee

No ticket — entry to the mosque complex is free. There is a donation box beside the shrine.

Opening hours & best time

An open site, visitable all day. It is still a living mosque with five daily prayers. Fridays at Jummah are the busiest; around noon on other days it is pleasantly quiet.

Best time

Afternoon light shows the terracotta at its best. The centuries-old Bagha fair follows Eid-ul-Fitr, and winter brings guest birds to the big tank.

Traveller tips

  • Remove your shoes before entering — it is an active mosque, so keep voices low.

  • The tank east of the mosque spans about 52 bighas — a full circuit of its bank is roughly 1 km, lovely in the morning.

  • If blessed food (tabarak) is being shared from the shrine kitchen after prayers, don't say no.

  • On the way, the duck-fry at Maramria bazar is a legend of this route.

  • Arrive Friday morning or before noon to beat the Jummah crowd.
