History & significance

Founded in 1910 as the Varendra Research Society by Sarat Kumar Ray, Akshay Kumar Maitreya and Ramaprasad Chanda. The society's own building rose in 1913 and opened its doors in 1919; the 1923 excavation at Paharpur brought 256 artefacts here. Rajshahi University has run it since 1964. Guides differ on collection size — the acting director says over 17,000 objects, others nearer 9,000.

How to get there

  • With children, use the garden seating outside; drinking water is available at the front.

  • On quiet days the staff volunteer explanations — don't hesitate to ask.
