Carmichael College
কারমাইকেল কলেজ
Carmichael College stands in the heart of Rangpur city — not just an educational institution, but a century-old home of learning and memories for all of North Bengal. Walking through its huge green campus, past old buildings in calm surroundings, you feel the story of Rangpur's pride for yourself. If you are touring Rangpur town, this is one of the places you really should not miss.
History & significance
On 10 November 1916, Lord Carmichael, then Governor of Bengal, laid the college's foundation stone — the college takes his name. Built on the strength of a fundraising drive led by district collector J. N. Gupta, it has been the heart of learning in North Bengal since before independence. The 610-by-60-foot Indo-Saracenic administrative building, opened in 1918, remains its signature landmark. Affiliated with the National University since 1992, the college runs HSC through master's programmes for roughly eighteen thousand students. Right beside it sits Begum Rokeya University — the only full public university of Rangpur division, established on 12 October 2008 — built on land given by the college.
How to get there
The college is inside Rangpur city, so getting there from town is easy. From anywhere in the city, a rickshaw will take you there comfortably. Begum Rokeya University sits right next door, and on the way you pass the Lalbagh market — on Sundays, when the market is on, that road gets very busy.

Opening hours & best time

Best time
Daylight hours are best for walking the campus; it is large, so come without rushing and keep some time in hand.
Traveller tips
The campus is big and beautifully kept — walk it slowly and you'll take in the old buildings, the halls, and a heritage tree that has stood here for ages.
This is a working institution — the polite thing is to roam quietly and stay out of the students' way.
On a one-day Rangpur trip, plan Carmichael College together with Tajhat Palace and the town's other sights.
The Lalbagh market sits on the way — on Sundays the crowds can eat into your time, so keep some extra time for the journey.
