Destination guide

Chandranath Hill

চন্দ্রনাথ পাহাড়

Crowning Sitakunda, Chandranath Temple is among Bangladesh's most important Hindu shrines — by many counts one of the 51 Shakti Peethas. Climb ~2,200 steps to ~1,152 ft and all of Sitakunda, the plains and the Bay of Bengal open beneath you. It draws pilgrims in lakhs, and trekkers rate the climb among the best in the district.

History & significance

The temple is estimated at 800-1000+ years, many dating it to the Pal-Sena era. Legend holds Sati's right hand fell here. The summit shrine is Shiva's; the route passes Birupaksha Shiva, Sheetala Kund, Patal Kali and more. Over a million gather for the Shiva Chaturdashi fair.

How to get there

From Dhaka, the Chattogram mail/local train (৳120-125, departs ~11 pm, reaches Sitakunda 6:30-7 am) — the only train stopping there — or a non-AC bus (৳650-700). From Sitakunda bazar/rail crossing, a CNG to the hill base is ৳20 per head or ৳80-100 reserved (3-4 km). Not up for the walk? A CNG via the Eco Park road gets you near the summit for ৳250-300 each.

Entry fee

৳0 · traveller-reported

No hill ticket. A bamboo stick costs ৳20-40, refundable ৳10-20 on return; bag storage ৳20. Non-Hindus may not enter the inner temple — please respect the rule.

Opening hours & best time

Open all day, but everyone advises an early start — noon heat makes the stairs brutal and a dusk descent is risky.

Best time

The cool season (Oct-Feb) is comfortable. Monsoon wraps the hill in green and clouds — magical, though rain makes the trail treacherous. Festival days (Shiva Chaturdashi, Dol Purnima) mean big crowds and costs.

Traveller tips

  • Grippy shoes — never sandals or bare feet; wear loose clothes.

  • Go up the hillside path (left), come down the stairs — the tip recurs across accounts.

  • Shops line the trail with water, fruit and sherbet — no need to haul supplies from the base. Still carry water in the heat.

  • Monkeys throw stones on the ridge — stay alert. Climb in a group.
