Destination guide
Dharabharsha Char
ধারাবর্ষা চর
A man-made shal forest on a char in the Jamuna — Bogura locals call it the 'mini Sundarban'. Groups arrive by reserved boat to cook, play football, and bathe in the river; it's a beloved picnic ground. And one refreshingly honest visitor put it best: 'the river journey itself is the most beautiful part' — half the fun is getting there.
History & significance
Locals say the char is around 40 years old; afforestation began under the then district administrator, and from 2003 social forestry planted roughly 1,200 saplings per hectare, as researchers note. The sad side: the same accounts say about 40% of the original forest has already been lost to river erosion.
How to get there
From Bogura town, CNG to Kalitla Ghat (৳40–60 per person by two accounts), then a reserved boat — ৳1,500 to ৳6,500 depending on group size, more on holidays. On the char itself, horse carts or bikes (around ৳500/day). When the water is low, boats can't reach the forest — you hop across chars instead.
Entry fee
৳0 · traveller-reported
It's government-owned open land — visitors report no entry charge; the whole cost is the boat.
Opening hours & best time
No fixed hours, but leave the char by 4 pm — the last boat is at 5 pm and boats lose their way in the dark; one group told a frightening story of circling for over an hour in the night before spotting Kalitla's lights.
Best time
Monsoon is when the boat ride shines — one visitor said plainly, 'don't come outside the monsoon'. But winter is when kash flowers and the tamarisk groves look their best — you'll hear both camps; the choice is yours.
Traveller tips
Fix your boat in advance and bargain — fares jump on holidays.
The return is slower against the current — start back by 4 pm.
No shops, washrooms, or drinking water on the char — bring everything; for women or families, take a trusted local along.
If you plan to cook, carry your aloo ghati ingredients from home — it's Bogura's traditional group dish.
Pack out your own litter — nearly everyone complains the garden is filling up with disposable plates.
There are snakes on the char, and sand tracks make bike riding tricky — take care.
