Destination guide
Durgasagar Dighi
দুর্গাসাগর দিঘি
At Madhabpasha, Babuganj — 11–12 km from the city — a dighi so wide you can't see one bank from the other. An island sits at its exact centre, which many call its biggest draw. Ghats with stairs, a brick walking path, and a small enclosure with deer, monkeys and peacocks; one bank takes about 20 minutes on foot.
History & significance
Some say Raja Shivnarayan of Chandradwip excavated it about 250 years ago; others say it was dug in 1880, named for Queen Durgabati, to ease a water crisis. The size is likewise given as 45–55 acres. All accounts agree it's one of southern Bengal's great old dighis.
How to get there
It sits on the Guthia–Lakutia circuit, so a reserved CNG is the easiest way — 11–12 km from the city.
