Durga Sagor

The largest dighi (excavated lake) in southern Bangladesh, at Madhabpasha in Babuganj about 11 km from Barishal city. It was excavated in 1780 by Rani Durgabati, mother of Raja Joy Narayan, and covers about 25 hectares. A small artificial island sits in the lake and migratory birds gather here in winter. It is close to Guthia Mosque, so the two can be combined in one trip.

Guthia Mosque (Baitul Aman Jame Masjid)

A 14-acre modern mosque complex begun in 2003, containing a mosque, a large Eidgah, three lakes, a madrasa and an orphanage. Its 58-metre minaret of white marble is described as the tallest in the country. The lakes reflect the mosque from several angles, and evening floodlighting is the best time to visit. It pairs well with Durga Sagor on a day trip from Barishal city.

Oxford Mission Church (Epiphany Church)

A historic red-brick church in Greek revival style, established in 1903 and among the oldest and largest churches in Bangladesh. It looks five-storeyed from outside but has a single floor with a vast prayer hall, 40 archways and long corridors. The 35-acre compound holds 13 ponds, a school and a hospital. Note it is not a fully open tourist site: entry to the church building is restricted, and most visitors view it from outside.
