Jamuna River
যমুনা নদী
The mighty Jamuna sweeps along Bogura's eastern edge, and the Sariakandi ghats are its tourist face. Watching the sunset, boating out to the chars, tea on the bank — many say bathing in the river has 'a feeling all its own'. But a river with current deserves respect — be careful.
History & significance
The Jamuna has reshaped this region entirely — erosion has displaced hundreds of thousands; chars vanish within a decade, and new ones surface. This restless river is the force behind the whole Kalitla–Dharabharsha story.
How to get there
Bus from Bogura to Sariakandi ৳50–70, or CNG around ৳50 per person. From Kalitla Ghat, hire a boat — one traveller paid about ৳400 for a whole boat on an hour's char trip, and his advice was: 'bargain the price'.
Entry fee
No verified entry fee yet
No ticket for the river — your only cost is the boat.
Opening hours & best time
Open all day, but no boating after dark — both the current and the route turn dangerous.
Best time
In winter the water clears and big chars surface — 'winter is the most beautiful time', says one visitor. Others praise the vast monsoon waters — paired, though, with warnings of the river's 'terrible face' and erosion.
Traveller tips
Don't take risks sitting at the bow — a sudden gust threw one traveller into the river.
Sudden dark clouds and wind can arrive in the afternoon — frightening mid-river.
Bargain the boat hire, and agree the route first.
Tea and jhalmuri on the bank as the sun sets — the little stalls are half the charm.
