Destination guide
Muhuri Irrigation Project
মুহুরী প্রকল্প
The name that comes up first when travellers list Feni's highlights. A huge closure dam sits where the Feni, Muhuri and Kalidas-Pahaliya rivers meet — water and sky on every side. Almost everyone agrees: the sunset here is unmissable.
History & significance
Bangladesh's second-largest irrigation project, built 1977–86 to control floods and salinity. Its barrage carries around 40 sluice gates, and the country's first wind-power plant (2005) stood here — though travellers note it has long been idle.
How to get there
From Feni town take a bus/CNG towards Sonagazi (a reserved CNG runs about ৳200), then a local auto to the project gate — around ৳10 from Jorarganj. From Chattogram, come via Mirsharai/Jorarganj. Engine boats by the dam charge ৳50 per person.
Entry fee
৳0 · traveller-reported
Free to enter; boat trips ৳50 per person on a shared boat, or ৳350–1200 for the whole boat if you bargain.
Opening hours & best time
No fixed hours — open space. Crowds build from late afternoon.
Best time
Sunset is the main draw. November–March is ideal — calm water and winter migratory birds. Fridays get very crowded.
Traveller tips
Currents are strong when the gates open, and the dam banks are muddy and slippery.
In monsoon, only ride boats with an experienced boatman — the current turns dangerous.
The access road is badly potholed — allow extra travel time.
Pick up Sonagazi's famous buffalo-milk yoghurt on the way back — nearly every traveller insists on it.
