Shah Neyamatullah's Shrine (Tahkhana Complex)

নেয়ামতুল্লাহর মাজার (তোহাখানা কমপ্লেক্স)

A short walk from Choto Sona Mosque sits the Tahkhana Complex: the shrine of the Sufi saint Shah Syed Neyamatullah Wali, a Mughal-era mosque built by Shah Shuja, a 17-room Tahkhana building, and the Taleb-e-Shefa pond. Visitors often say the atmosphere here is deeply calm — after the busier sites, this place feels like a breath of relief.

History & significance

Shah Neyamatullah Wali came to preach Islam in the Gaur region; the story goes that Subahdar Shah Shuja became his disciple and built him this Tahkhana — the 'cold palace'. Many call the tomb building the first tomb architecture of the Mughal era, and the complex is listed with the Department of Archaeology. The famous legend: when the saint asked for land, Shuja handed him a glass of poisoned water; he drank half and poured the rest into the pond, and the pond turned sweet — named 'Taleb-e-Shefa', the pond of cure. The shrine holds the 'Zinda Pathor' (living stone), which locals say grows every year. The shrine committee formed in 1964.

How to get there

It's about 50 m northwest of Choto Sona Mosque — just walk around the pond-side path. From Chapainawabganj town it's roughly 35 km; come by auto or CNG via Kansat.

Nobody mentions any ticket — entry is free.

Opening hours & best time

The complex is open in daylight. The tomb building's door stays closed — the caretaker (khadem) opens it on request. The adjacent mosque holds five daily prayers.

Best time

Open all year. Two urs gatherings happen: on 1 Muharram, and on the last Thursday–Friday of the Bangla month Bhadro. Those days are busy; the rest of the year is quiet.

Traveller tips

  • Take the caretaker's permission to enter the tomb building — the door isn't always open.

  • Don't miss the Taleb-e-Shefa pond and the Zinda Pathor — hearing the stories from locals completes the visit.

  • Choto Sona Mosque, Tahkhana, Khania Dighi and Darasbari tour well together — one reserved van does it.
