Ratargul Swamp Forest
রাতারগুল জলাবন
Locals call it 'the Sundarbans of Sylhet', some even 'Bangladesh's Amazon' — the country's only freshwater swamp forest, underwater 4–5 months a year. Drifting a dinghy boat between koroch trees, with snake, monkey or even elephant sightings along the way, is for many the most memorable hour of a Sylhet trip.
History & significance
In 1973 the forest department declared 504 acres of it a wildlife sanctuary; the whole swamp forest is reported to cover about 3,325 acres.
How to get there
Head from Sylhet toward Gowainghat; dinghy boats leave from Talik ghat. A dinghy costs ৳750–830 (5–6 people) or about ৳100 a head — the government rate list is posted at the ghat, and past visitors advise not paying a taka beyond it.
Entry fee
৳50 · traveller-reported
The entry ticket is ৳50; the boat is separate — ৳750–830 per dinghy or about ৳100 a head.
Opening hours & best time
No fixed hours are reported — go in daylight.
Best time
Full monsoon water is the swamp at its real self — even the treetops sit below the waterline; when levels drop, walking paths emerge and the boat loses its charm.
Traveller tips
Snakes and insects live in the swamp — don't grab branches, don't drop plastic.
The boatmen's songs along the way are for many the trip's lasting memory.
It pairs in a one-day route with Bholaganj; even better if Utmachhara falls on the way.
