Destination guide
Shankarpasha Shahi Masjid
শংকরপাশা শাহী মসজিদ
A working mosque and one of the few surviving Sultanate-era monuments in Bangladesh: thick brick walls, a great dome with three smaller ones, six carved pillars and (in its original form) fifteen doors. Centuries abandoned, rediscovered by villagers clearing jungle, and now under careful renovation.
History & significance
An inscription ties it to Sultan Alauddin Husain Shah's reign — built under his officer Shah Majlis Amin; foundation dated 1493, completion 1513. Walls about 5 ft thick on three sides and ~10 ft on the west. Some visitors say black basalt stone was carried by river (comparing it to Gaur's Chhoto Sona Masjid); the official description treats it as brick.
How to get there
About 10 km from Habiganj town, in Rajiura union — CNG/auto ৳30–50. Ask for Rajiura or the village; many locals do not recognise the name 'Shankarpasha' alone.
Entry fee
No verified entry fee yet
Free; it is an active mosque — dress modestly and avoid prayer times if sightseeing.
Opening hours & best time
Open around prayer times; visit before evening.
Best time
Dry season — this corner of the district gets heavy rain and a wet day can waste the trip.
Traveller tips
Stay in Shayestaganj if overnighting (Nadifa Hotel, ৳300/room, reported decent); Dhansiri restaurant nearby does rice-dal bhaji-chicken grill ~৳165.
Locals in the mosque committee can tell the rediscovery story — how flood and clearing jungle brought the monument back into view.
