Destination guide
Shingara House, Rangpur
শিঙাড়া হাউজ, রংপুর
On Haripatti Road in central Rangpur, beside the Kalibari, stands a famous shop now in its seventh decade — Shingara House. Kanai Lal Sarkar started it in the Pakistan era; today the next generation of the family runs it — reports differ on whether it is son Bhabatosh or grandson Sanjay. Its hot shingaras with a special chutney have made it a Rangpur landmark — in 2022 Indian High Commissioner Vikram Doraiswami dropped in for a taste.
History & significance
The shop dates to the Pakistan era, founded by Kanai Lal Sarkar. Reports differ on the exact year — 1962 or 1960 — but all agree it has run from the same spot for over six decades, now in its third generation. Locals know it simply as Rangpur Shingara House, and the house-made chutney served with the shingara is its signature.
How to get there
The shop sits in central Rangpur — on Haripatti Road beside Rangpur City Kalibari. A short rickshaw ride from anywhere in town; it fits neatly as a food stop on a one-day tour of town.

Traveller tips
The shingara without the house chutney misses the whole point.
It falls naturally on a one-day city circuit with Tajhat Palace — easy to slot into a plan.
Carrying shingaras away? Ask for an open packet so the steam doesn't sog them.
Prices change — check on site rather than relying on older figures.
