Tamabil Border & Meghalaya Hills View

তামাবিল সীমান্ত ও মেঘালয় পাহাড়ের ভিউ

A little past Jaflong lies the Tamabil border — with the green hills of India's Meghalaya filling the view across the line. The two sides sit so close that Dawki Bazar in India is just 1.7 km from Tamabil zero point. Without leaving Bangladesh you can watch cloud-covered ridges, the hanging Dawki bridge and streams falling on the far hills — the very reason many come to Jaflong.

History & significance

Tamabil has long been a trade route — the land port carries coal, stone, sand and goods including medicines between the two countries, and the far hills' streams feed the Piain's monsoon currents.

How to get there

From Sylhet's Humayun Rashid Chattar a reserved CNG costs ৳800–900 (55–60 km, about two hours); a local bus from Kadamtala/Supari Ghat is ৳100–150. Coming straight from Dhaka, only Ena Transport runs buses all the way to Jaflong (৳880) — everything else drops you in Sylhet.

Entry fee

No verified entry fee yet

Nobody reports a ticket for viewing the hills from the Bangladesh side; BGB may ask for ID near the border.

Opening hours & best time

The area is open all day; border immigration starts around 8am, some say 9 — so mornings are best.

Best time

Monsoon (June–September) — the hills turn fully green with clouds and falling streams; nearly everyone who has gone recommends this window. In the dry season the ridges look grey.

Traveller tips

  • You need no passport or visa just to view the hills — but never cross the fence or rope; it is punishable.

  • Arrive at dawn for cloud-cleared hills and an uncrowded ghat.

  • Walk past the hanging bridge along the river for the most open view of the hills across.

  • The Piain's current rises suddenly in monsoon — ask locals before boating toward the far bank.

  • If crossing into India, one traveller reports a ৳1,000 travel tax plus immigration, customs and BGB formalities — arrive early morning.
