Town Hall & Shapla Chattar
টাউন হল ও শাপলা চত্বর
The city's living room since the 1890s — Town Hall and the adjacent Shapla Chattar mark the very centre of Rangpur: the Shilpakala Academy, sculptures, tea and fuchka stalls, political meetings. If you want to feel the city's daily life, start here.
History & significance
Town Hall's original name was Rangpur Natya Samaj Griha, founded in 1891 per Bangla Wikipedia; in 1971 it was used as a torture cell. The three water-lily sculptures of Shapla Chattar now anchor the city centre, with Shapla cinema hall beside it. The Public Library next door is currently closed — book-lovers should use the Divisional Government Public Library nearby.
