Hayat Mahmud Memorial, Jharbishila
হেয়াত মামুদ স্মৃতিকেন্দ্র, ঝাড়বিশিলা
The village of Jharbishila in Pirganj Upazila of Rangpur is the birthplace of Hayat Mahmud (1693–1760), a poet of medieval Bengali literature. His grave is here, alongside a memorial centre built on the initiative of the District Council. If you love the history of Bengali literature, this quiet village spot carries a special meaning.
History & significance
Hayat Mahmud was born in Jharbishila in 1693 and died in 1760. His notable works are Jangnama (1723), Sarbabhedabani (1732), Hitajnanabani (1753) and Ambiyabani (1758). Popular moral verses about seeing yet being blind are attributed to him. He followed Alaol's literary style and revered him as a guru — but Alaol himself was a poet of the Chittagong-Arakan region, with no established connection to Rangpur. The District Council built the memorial centre here in the poet's memory, and every year on 18 February a commemorative event is held under the district administration's arrangements.
