Hiron Point

হরিণ পয়েন্ট

The southernmost tourist point of the Sundarbans, part of a UNESCO World Heritage site — where thousands of spotted deer roam and, with luck, a Royal Bengal Tiger crosses your path. Not a day trip: you need a boat and at least a two-to-three-day plan.

History & significance

Named for the free-roaming spotted deer. It sits inside the Sundarbans West Wildlife Sanctuary at the forest department's Nilkomol station on the Kunga river. Locals proudly recall the total solar eclipse seen from here on 24 October 1995.

How to get there

Boats leave from Khulna's Jelkhana Ghat, passing the Rupsha bridge and Mongla port — roughly 80–90 km by river from Mongla. The ship anchors offshore and small trawlers take you in; life jackets are mandatory.

Entry fee

No verified entry fee yet

A forest department permit is required to enter the Sundarbans (reported at ৳150–200/day, up to 5 days). Three-day/two-night boat packages run ৳11,000–25,000 per person including meals, depending on the vessel.

Opening hours & best time

Entry is tide-dependent — small channels become impassable at low water. You move under forest staff instructions.

Best time

November–February — deer are more visible in winter, migratory birds call from the trees, and the channels stay navigable.

Traveller tips

  • Never wander off alone — travellers retell the story of a group that ignored its guide on Jamtala beach and heard a tiger roar on the way back.

  • Carry a straight stick — nearly every group does.

  • Keep your voice down near wild animals and never feed them.
