Teesta Riverbank — Mahipur Bridge, Gangachara
তিস্তা নদীর পাড় — মহিপুর সেতু, গঙ্গাচড়া
Where the Rangpur–Lalmonirhat highway crosses the Teesta at Mahipur Ghat in Gangachara Upazila stands the bridge everyone simply calls the Teesta Bridge. River breeze, boat rides, riverside food stalls and the bare winter sandbars — an easy day by the river, close to Rangpur town. In autumn the banks fill with kashful.
History & significance
The Teesta is the lifeline of this region. Yet upstream withdrawal and siltation dry the river further every year — from the start of winter, bare sand stretches as far as the eye can see. That change has made winter walks on the vast exposed chars a unique experience. Note: the Teesta Barrage many have heard of actually sits in Hatibandha, Lalmonirhat — not in Rangpur district; if curious, it needs its own trip.
How to get there
Mahipur Bridge is about 16 km from Rangpur town — roughly half an hour by road. Take the Rangpur–Lalmonirhat highway (R101) via Gangachara by auto-rickshaw, easy-bike or CNG; private cars reach the bridge point directly.

No entry fee — the riverbank is open to everyone.
Opening hours & best time
There are no fixed opening hours, and local habit tells you the best time anyway — the riverbank is liveliest in the afternoon light.
Best time
Late afternoon is liveliest — locals consider this one of their favourite evening haunts. Autumn brings kashful, winter the vast sandbars; in monsoon the scene changes with the water. June 2026 saw reports of erosion at the bridge's protection embankment — check locally before a monsoon visit.
Traveller tips
Agree the boat fare with the boatman before you board.
On winter sandbars, avoid the crumbling edges of the chars.
The riverside stalls do fresh fritters and tea — perfect for an afternoon break.
In monsoon, take no risks under the bridge or along the embankment edge.
