Rupsha Bridge

রূপসা সেতু

Khulna's favourite evening spot — a 1.6 km bridge over the Rupsha river with four staircases you can walk up on foot. Almost every traveller mentions the golden sunset light on the river and the bridge lights reflecting on the water after dark. Locals jokingly call it "the poor man's Padma Bridge".

History & significance

Built with Japanese JICA assistance; foundation laid in March 2001, opened on 21 May 2005. The main bridge is 1.60 km (4.80 km with approach roads), 16.48 m wide. Linking Khulna with Bagerhat and Mongla, travellers call it "the gateway to Khulna".

How to get there

From Zero Point take an easy-bike (৳25 per person), or a CNG from Shibbari (৳20, get down at Tiger Paste Mor). Walking up the bridge is free — only vehicles pay toll. The ferry ghat beside the bridge crosses the river for ৳60 per person.

Entry fee

৳0 · traveller-reported

No ticket for pedestrians — the staircases are free.

Opening hours & best time

Open all day; late afternoon to evening is the best window. The bridge gets very crowded after sunset.

Best time

4–7 pm — you get both the sunset and the light display. Midday is hot and uncomfortable.

Traveller tips

  • After dark avoid the lonely Khulna-side area below the bridge — the crowd stays up on the bridge itself.

  • In a vehicle, choose your toll lane carefully — once in, you can't exit without paying.

  • Ferry-ghat steps get wet and crowded — board trawlers carefully.
